Film Noir

I’m not so sure, i guess i look at films such as ‘Chinatown’ and ‘the man who wasn’t there’ as full on noirs, but again this is down to opinion.

This noir coming out on the Masters of Cinema label

This is a good film I would call New Noir. It’s about a private dick who talks to himself and falls in love with the woman who is the antagonist to the man that hires him.

I haven’t seen a real noir movie but Sin City got me interested. Does anyone have a good recomendations for the first noir movie i should watch? I read a bit about M and it seems really interesting.

Start with ‘Double Indemnity’ directed by Billy Wilder. Then go onto the following…‘The Maltese Falcon’ directed by John Hughes, ‘The Big Sleep’ directed by Howard Hawks, ‘Gilda’ directed by Charles Vidor, ‘The Big Combo’ directed by Joseph H Lewis, ‘The Lady From Shanghai’ directed by Orson Welles, ‘Detour’ directed by Edgar G Ulmer and ‘Sunset Boulevard’ also by Billy Wilder which is not usually thought of as Noir but I think it is.

Not noir but you might find the following films enjoyable. ‘The Third Man’ and ‘Odd Man Out’ directed by Carol Reed, ‘Cat People’ directed by Jacques Tourneur, ‘Mask of Satan’ directed by Mario Bava and ‘Beyond Reasonable Doubt’ directed by Fritz Lang.

agreed

then go into Hitchcock’s “Shadow of a Doubt”, “Strangers on a Train” & “Notorious”, Laughton’s “The Night of the Hunter”, then “Laura”, Stanley Kubrick’s “The Killing”, “The Big Heat” by Fritz Lang, Huston’s “Key Largo” and “The Asphalt Jungle”, “Touch of Evil” by Welles and eventually 2 mega-classics “This Gun for Hire” and "Murder, My Sweet"

enjoy 8)

My favourite film noir is ‘Where the sidewalk ends’

Best film noir:

All Through the Night with Humphrey Bogart!

Well, i wouldn’t consider it best noir but i liked Conflict [ 1945 ] with Bogart and Greenstreet a lot.

Plot: Richard Mason [ Boagrt ] is slightly injured in a car accident but pretends greater hurt so that he cannot accompany his wife Kathryn on a trip to the mountains. He does, however, kill her on a lonely mountain road. Or did he? He smells her perfume, finds her jewelry, sees an envelope addressed with her handwriting. He must go back to the scene of the crime to find … what?

The dialogues were perfect, the scenery.

The ending is therefore not great, although it is clever.

And there’s Pickup on South Street [ 1953 ], directed by Samuel Fuller.

Plot: While on the subway to deliver a piece of film she believes contains corporate secrets, Candy’s wallet is stolen by Skip McCoy [ Widmark ]. The film actually contains government secrets on their way to “the Commies”, and Candy has been under surveillance by government agents. They see the theft, but Skip eludes them. Anxious to recover the film, Joey, Candy’s ex-lover and the man using her as courier, convinces her to find the thief. She tracks Skip down through street connections while the police find him shortly after. Skip finally realizes the film is worth a lot more than he thought worth some people’s life, in fact.

Widmark’s performance is the best argument recommending the tough movie, the story is a little to deep into Cold War.
