Let me see if I can clarify this:
If I were to say that “the Tarantino Archives is the best German QT website,” then I have qualified that statement. The implication is that there are better, non-German QT websites out there.
When the Bride says “Bill said you were one of the best ladies he’d ever seen with an edged weapon,” there really are two qualifications:
- Vernita was one of the best
ladies with edged weapons (but there are men who are better).
- Vernita was one of the best ladies
with edged weapons (but there are women who are better overall).
I’m not sure which qualification bothered Vernita, maybe it was both. She might have thought that she was the best overall,period.

Rereading my post, I realized that I had missed the most obvious qualification. The Bride says “one of the best,” not “the best.” This was probably what Vernita was talking about.
