Ahah, ok, thx cause now I don’t feel lame cause I didn’t remember the number plate But anywa, very encouraging to see you so concentrated to get the references. It always brings more for a QT movie. Keep on with your hawk’s eyes
I actually figured all the plates were connected to other car films. I just didnt do the checking on it.
I already posted this in another forum but here it goes again…
For Death Proof… you can add the three-girls formula films like the nurses, teachers, cheerleaders films… the last shot from the 1st trailer with the three girls walking is a clear nod to those New World Pictures/Crown films from the early 70s which as far as I am concerned are the quintessence of 70s exploitation… the nurses films from New World were first (New world started in 1970 with Jack Hill’s Big Doll house and the first nurses movie)… Night call nurses by Jonathan Kaplan is the best (this one is smg like a godard’s influenced sexy exploitation) but Private duty nurses by George Armitage is ok too (sam fuller is playing the bad guy in it)…
Here, instead of “the young nurses”, we have “the young actresses” lol
You got it. Thats exactly what it is. I love how QTs doing a Jack Hill and throwing as many Exploitation subgenres in his film as he can. You got the slasher film, stunt film, hixploitation, car chase, girl gang (you’ll see), cheerleaders. Awesome! 8)

I was watching “The Car” on tv this morning and this movie definitely inspired Death Proof. And Im pretty sure that DP will have the orange screen like they had in the car. Also the storylines are very similar.

Unfortunately "The Car" is out of print on R1 DVD. :(
I was looking at the DVD box cover for the 1976 film called “Cannonball” starring David Carradine (I hope I have the name correct) and couldn’t help but think it might have had an influence on Death Proof. What do ya’ll think?

Death Race 2000 I think was the film that QT was most inspired by. He actually dedicated the screenplay to Charles B Griffith the guy who wrote it.
You mean Death Race 2000 dont you
edit: too late

I just thought with it being an exploitation car chase film from the 70's involving high speeds and death via car that it may have had some kind of influence on Q.. I guess not? He does tend to draw from
Re. that scene where Russell’s character plows through a drive-in’s sign I thought I saw “Scary Movie 4” posted on it. Can anyone confirm this? Also, I thought I saw another movie posted on the sign as well, which one was it?
Wolf creek and Scary Movie 4.
M: In regards to Cannonball, QT loves that one too, I know he showed it at one of his QT Fests. Im sure all those movies inspired Death Proof (Vanishing Point, Dirty Mary Crazy Larry, Gone in 60 Seconds etc). But Death Race 2000 in particular was a main inspiration not just because of the car killing thing but because of the writer Charles B Griffith whose scripts QT really likes.
Death Proof’s dialogue also makes direct reference to the following people:
Daryl Hannah
Angelina Jolie
The Rock
Zoe Bell (obviously!)
Regarding Zoe, Death Proof is also the first QT film in which an actress is going to play herself.
Scar you should enter all this into the Wiki. I sent Seb a list of the other references we found too. Youll see it if you check it out. Grindhouse Trivia section
Gonna check it out right now
EDIT: Fuck, I’m trying to log in but I’m getting error messages all the time. >:(

Ah HA! Now I see! By the way, is Q. saying something to somebody (Film geeks? The directors of those films? Someone else?) by having his lead character crash through and destroy a sign with those two specific films on it?
I think the crashing through that sign showing those 2 films is a subliminal way of QT saying: F** those movies! This is Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof! But I also think that since QT liked Wolf Creek alot, its a kind of shout out to the movie. Im not sure about Scary Movie 4, if he liked it alot or hated it.
A straightforward reason why they’re referenced could be that both movies are owned by the Weinstein Company. I don’t think Harvey would appreciate seeing QT showcasing a public “Fuck these movies!” attitude towards the movies, so I would exclude that.
I dont think The Weinsteins care if QT is subliminally saying anything. They just want to make bank.

My feeling is that this sign is a way to say “if there were still drive-ins and grindhouses that’s the kind of program we’d have”.
That rings a bell to me, because in the late 80s early 90s grindhouses in Paris showed programs like “Leathal Weapon 2 + Predator” or “Aliens+Texas chainsaw Massacre 3” or I remember "Way of the Dragon + Pet Semetary"
Same in NY, I think the last program of the Lyric was “Falling Down” by Joel Schumasher!
Tony, that could be it too. Good one!!
Ya know, thats why we’re QT fans, we all have ideas that we come up with for things we notice in his movies. 8)
