Death Proof in official competition in Cannes

#1

It has been announced today, Death Proof is in official competition, and not only in a midnight screening. So cool. And the movie is 1 hour 50 mins. Pretty long.

I hope it’s gonna win something, can be since he’s loved at the fest.

Even though QT told Fangoria that he perferred his “edited” cut of Death Proof over this extended version that’s gonna play in Cannes, I wonder if he’s gonna have 2nd thoughts if it does win something.

#3

i hope both versions make it to DVD.

“it’s in the competition” that just means that he has given them a copy of the film, right? it doesn’t mean any jury member or anyone has said “that’s good, we’ll take that” or something?

#4

It means that he submitted a print of the film and they have accepted it into the festival. Now it is “in competition” with the other accepted films for the Palm D’Or.

Yes, I found this:

“Moviemaker QUENTIN TARANTINO has been nominated for the top prize at next month’s (May07) Cannes Film Festival in France.

Tarantino’s Death Proof - half of the horror doublebill Grindhouse - will compete against his peers Gus Van Sant (Paranoid Park), Wong Kar Wai (My Blueberry Nights), and The Coen brothers (No Country For Old Men), among others, for the prestigious Palme d’Or.

He previously won the award in 1994 for action thriller Pulp Fiction, which starred John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson and Uma Thurman.

The film directors will learn their fate when the festival opens on 16 May (07).

I don’t think anyone got a copy yet 'cause Quentin and Sally just finished cutting it, yesterday (Friday.)

Really? That must be the goal for a runningtime 'cause they just locked it yesterday.

listed as 1h56min… interesting, 26 minutes or so longer than the Grindhouse version, exactly as mentioned

Where is it listed as that, and did that listing go out before Friday? I’m guessing the official runningtime isn’t out yet.

I think I read somewhere it will be shown at the 22nd.

Anybody know when they announce the winners?

#16

They should arrive today, because I found this at <LINK_TEXT text=“http://www.baltimoresun.com/entertainme … ?track=rss”>http://www.baltimoresun.com/entertainment/movies/bal-to.cannes18may18,0,5078842.story?track=rss</LINK_TEXT>

Baltimore native Tracie Thoms, one of the featured stars in Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof, is heading for the South of France Sunday to help promote the movie at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

The festival goes until may 27 and that’s the day the winners are announced.

with Stephen Frears president of the Jury i doubt grind house will get anything… remember: Clint Eastwood was president of the jury when Pulp Fiction won and QT was president of the Jury when Old Boy got the Grand Price… in the meanwhile (and after) no genre oriented film scored any major price…!
