Critics Reaction to Basterds

[quote=“Tim12345”]
I’ve noticed that QT haters always express a lot of love for Jackie Brown, which is his least flamboyant and, although well made and acted, least interesting movie.

JB is personally my favorite one. But at his release time the movie wasn’t THAT praised. It was at the time critically dismissed as disappointing, overlong, overlong… It did hurt QT that he got the reviewer backlash with a movie for which he had taken such risks and tried to do something different. But it doesn’t prevent Kermode’s idea from being FALSE. QT didn’t wake up and say: “I’m gonna do a revenge flick to perform better at the BO”. He had discussed with Uma at the time of PF about the project of this revenge lady keen on martial arts and written a few pages of screenplay at the time. After JB, he went into IB screenplay, which he didn’t manage to finish at the time. And one day he met Uma again at the Oscar party and she asked him where the revenge flick was at. He decided to finish writing it. The fact that Kermode didn’t like KB and DP -it’s his right- has nothing to do with any BO thing.

Pretty good read from the only critic I would actually consider taking seriosuly. No rating quite yet, but from what you read, it’s looking damn good here.

It’s interesting that all the post-Cannes reviews so far (about 20) have been positive, except one (calling it “insensitive”, duh), a lot of them naming it his best since Jackie Brown. Is the new cut that better or do the critics hate long movies at Cannes because they take away their precious partying time?

Anyway, I’m glad that all the reviews mention that the dialogue is great cause I’ve had some worries after Death Proof and even Kill Bill to some extent (though I love those movies) that Quentin lost the snap in his writing, but it looks like he’s back on the track…

I can not wait for the real Roger Ebert review.

I wonder why hes making us wait.

Me too, he’s one of the few critics who’s opinion actually matters to me as a film goer. I’m pretty sure he’s said he didn’t not like it.

Well, I’m not sure but I think he liked it. I mean he doesnt hate QT, he gave a thumbs up for kill bill. Anyway, I cant wait to read it.

Yeah, no...Don't worry about that. The dialogue is incredible. I consider it as one of his very best.

Well here it is…

4 out of 4 stars…what a great review!

Awesome review. Doesn’t suck his dick, just tells us it’s a damn fine movie.

Went out and bought my tickets for Friday! One for the morning show, one for the evening.

that’s exactly it. a friend of mine saw it in cannes. he actually watched it at 8 in the morning still drunk from partying all night. guess what? i thought it was too long and slow.

that's what i did yesterday. you'll see that IB is like sex: twice a day is not enough 8)

I agree it is a great review, but it was not what I expected. Ebert wrote that he wanted to wait before he wrote his review after he watched the film at Cannes. He wrote (paraphrasing) that he wanted to think about Tarantino’s films, films in general, and Cannes. He did not mention much of this. Anywho, still a good review.

Some how the Ebert review makes me want to see IB even more

4 stars by Ebert! Tarantino is the real deal! - He says! O0

On that note: DON’T READ THE REVIEW IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN THE MOVIE.

I was reading it and sensed a terrible spoiler so I stopped.
