Critics Reaction to Basterds

I’ve noticed that QT haters always express a lot of love for Jackie Brown, which is his least flamboyant and, although well made and acted, least interesting movie.

JB is personally my favorite one. But at his release time the movie wasn’t THAT praised. It was at the time critically dismissed as disappointing, overlong, overlong… It did hurt QT that he got the reviewer backlash with a movie for which he had taken such risks and tried to do something different. But it doesn’t prevent Kermode’s idea from being FALSE. QT didn’t wake up and say: “I’m gonna do a revenge flick to perform better at the BO”. He had discussed with Uma at the time of PF about the project of this revenge lady keen on martial arts and written a few pages of screenplay at the time. After JB, he went into IB screenplay, which he didn’t manage to finish at the time. And one day he met Uma again at the Oscar party and she asked him where the revenge flick was at. He decided to finish writing it. The fact that Kermode didn’t like KB and DP -it’s his right- has nothing to do with any BO thing.
