Sorry to the Kevin Smith fans but he AINT no Classic director. Just because you like Mallrats and Clerks doesnt mean he deserves to be on a list with pioneers of cinema. Hes not even a good director.

My list of classic directors with some examples of their films:

Sergio Leone (The Dollars Trilogy, Once Upon a Time in The West & America)

Orson Welles (Citizen Kane, Touch of Evil, Lady From Shanghai)

Brian DePalma (Carrie, Blow Out, Scarface, The Untouchables, Carlitos Way)

Hitchcock (Psycho, The Birds, Rear Window, Frenzy)

Kubrick ( The Killing, Dr Strangelove, 2001, A Clockwork Orange)

John Ford (Stagecoach, Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, The Searchers)

Howard Hawks (Rio Bravo, Red River, Bringing Up Baby, His Girl Friday)

Roger Corman (St Valentines Day Massacre, Fall of The House of Usher, X: The Man With X Ray Eyes)

Steven Spielberg (Jaws, ET, Raiders of The Lost Ark, Shindlers List)

Jean Luc Godard (Breathless, Les Caribiners, Masculine Feminine Le Petit Soldat, A Bande Apart)

Jean Pierre Melville (Bob Le Flambeur, Le Doulos, Le Circle Rouge)

Federico Fellini (8 1/2, La Strada, La Dolce Vita)

Sam Peckinpah (The Wild Bunch, Straw Dogs, The Getaway, Junior Bonner)

Chang Cheh (Vengeance, Heroes Two, Five Deadly Venoms, Five Fingers of Death)

Mario Bava (Black Sunday, Black Sabbath, Lisa And The Devil, Kill Baby Kill)

Martin Scorsese (Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, GoodFellas, King of Comedy)

Francis Ford Coppola (Godfather Trilogy, The Conversation, Apocalypse Now)

and

If any newer directors deserve to be on the list, Quentin Tarantino is definitely my number one. Hes the best post modern auteur since Leone imo. ÂÂ
