Brian DePalma

I loved loved loved Blow Out, and am very eager to see more of his suspense/thriller movies. Where should I start?

Check out Dressed to Kill. It’s a direct rip-off of Psycho, but it’s well-made.

DePalma’s Dressed to Kill is a PERFECT film to connect with Quentin Tarantinos style of filmmaking.

The reason being is DePalma is another director who like Tarantino has taken stories we all know and put his own twist and personality into them. DePalma also did this with Phantom of the Paradise (Phantom of The Opera) and Blow Out (Blow Up), Body Double (Rear Window/Vertigo), Raising Cain (another more complex riff on Psycho).

The funny thing about DTK is, whenever I watch it, I hardly ever think about Psycho. It is basically DePalma’s take on Psycho, but I actually enjoy it more than Hitch’s film.

I also think DTK is like DePalma’s take on a giallo. Its got all the ingredients. So if you like giallos, check out DTK, its a brilliant black comedy thriller.

If you watch DePalma’s films youll see many of them have nods to Hitch’s and other directors films (Wilder, Eisenstein, Argento, Godard, Welles, Lynch), but DePalma has also created his own distinct style of cinema. Proof being Tarantino’s constant cinematic nods to him.

i bought the “carlio’s way” dvd yesterday and watched it, perfect movie.

but what i want to tell you guys, did anyone notice that there is a little taxi driver “homage”.

when carlito sits with his ex girlfriend in that cafe at night…they are sitting exactly the same way, as batsy and travis did…ok who cares…but at the end of this scene, there is this old fucked up cab (the model travis had) driving in the background.

maybe it’s nothing, or maybe it’s just a little sign between good friends…

so, is there anybody who thought also of taxidriver when he saw this scene ?

The only films i have seen by him are Scarface which kicks ass, Blow Out which is my favorite movie by him, dressed to kill whci was okay although some of the nudity was cool, carrie- which i liked and mission impossible which is not so good. Anything else by him i should see?

I’ve only watched Carrie, Blow Out, Scarface and Carlito’s Way and damn theyr’e depressing. Do all De Palma’s movies have tragedic endings?

I bought a used copy of “Blow Out” yesterday and loved it. The story, Travolta, and DePalma’s direction were all really really good. I’ve got “Scarface” too, just haven’t gotten around to watchin’ it yet.

for those who dont know who de palma is (which Im sure you do) he did blow out, directed scarface, and most people think of him as the new age hitchcock. I loved the movie, the fury probably my favorite reminded me of the movie scanners. anyway I heard dressed to kill was good but every time its on I always miss it. can anybody tell me if its any good

I love Dressed To Kill. It’s like the erotic version of Psycho.

Mission Impossible. Rocks.

blow out is better.

R1 SE of Body Double on the way:
From Davisdvd:

“Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced Body Double: Special Edition for release on October 3rd. Director Brian De Palma’s ode to “Vertigo” and “Rear Window” arrives with an anamorphic transfer, a Dolby Digital Surround track and the newly-produced featurettes “The Seduction,” “The Set-Up,” “The Mystery” and “The Controversy,” all featuring new on-camera interviews with De Palma and actors Melanie Griffith, Gregg Henry and Dennis Franz. Retail will be $19.94.”
Critics seemed to have hated this one, but I never had a problem with it. I remember being seriously creeped out by “The Indian”.

I love Body Double. Sure it’s a corny movie, but it’s got impressive camera-work, an entertaining plot, Melanie Griffith’s naked ass and Frankie Goes To Hollywood. Few movies can beat that.

“Body Double” is my least favorite Depalma film.

My least favorite De Palma film would be Carrie.

If I had to choose a least favorite one it’ll probably be Raising Cain. One of the very few DePalma movies I don’t really care about. I think both Carrie and Body Double are awesome.
