Oh my god, 2007 was one of the best years for movies period, just by the sheer number of amazing flicks, not least of which were No Country For Old Men and the best picture of that year There Will Be Blood:
Into The Wild
The Darjeeling Limited
Grindhouse
Ratatouille
Black Snake Moan
Zodiac
Knocked Up
Super Bad
Ocean’s Thirteen
Sicko
The Bourne Ultimatum
3:10 To Yuma
Eastern Promises
Michael Clayton
American Gangster
There Will Be Blood
No Country For Old Men
Juno
Atonement
The Mist
Sweeney Todd
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
I’m Not There
The Lookout
Waitress
1408
Rescue Dawn
The Simpsons Movie
Persepolis
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
I know there’s more, but fuck is thatlist awesome.

Okay, I’m shocked. You haven’t seen into the wild either? Is it anybody here at all who have seen it? WTF is going on?
I have seen “Into the wild” and I think it should have ended after the Lord Byron quote.
There is a pleasure in the pathless woods,
There is a rapture on the lonely shore,
There is society, where none intrudes,
By the deep sea, and music in its roar:
I love not man the less, but Nature more.
Lord Byron, Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage
The movie makes a caricature of all the other people except for the main guy, who finds the only right path in life in spite of all the ‘ignorant’ people around him. It annoyed the hell out of me.
I know Cyber_Lili loves the movie though! And she is always right. So don’t mind my personal dislikes of the movie
In 2007 I most liked “The Darjeeling Limited”. It’s a perfect movie. Zodiac is underrated and all people disliking it just say it’s boring and too long. I could’ve easily handled 3 hours more of the movie. But I am a sucker for these kind of puzzling murder cases, haha
I thought No Country was good, not great. Not even in my Top 5 Coen films. There Will Be Blood was a movie I wouldnt even watch again. People made that movie out to be such a masterpiece. Its not to me. But Ive never been a big fan of PTA. Into The Wild was a well made biopic but lets be honest, it was a fuckin downer at the end. Live and be free, then DIE for no reason! The Darjeeling Limited sucked. Talk about a waste of time. Can you say self-indulgent gobbledy gook? Blech. Zodiac was good, I like Fincher alot, one of my favorite modern directors up with QT, but I wouldnt rave about it. I still like Seven a bit more.

Yeah, I didn’t want to rid myself of the CHE banner to express it’s awesomeness to everyone, but I went passed these Marion photos and just had to have em. lol.

You know she appeared completely naked in a movie. You see ALL of her.
I still remember PT Anderson’s expression when they announced The Coens as best directors, I even saw Marty’s face sink down a bit in disappointment when he announced The Coens, it was really a rough night. For people to say that awards don’t mean a thing to them - they are really full of shit. I mean Bette Davis was not all about the awards, but she knew when she really deserved them. In fact when she was nominated for Of Human Bondage, it was said that she led the best supporting actress category in votes, but Jack Warner sent out letters to see that Bette did not get the award, because her wage would have risen significantly. The very next year there was a change in the motion picture board and she got her Oscar for “Dangerous”.
Even in her late years she wondered why she never won for Best Actress in her Margo Channing, Baby Jane Hudson performances - and she was right. Almost no one in Hollywood liked her because of her ego. But we all know she just cared too much for her great work.
Theres a point where movies become really overhyped to me. Nowadays mainstream movies are mostly hype and not much else. If somethings really good and a solid film, its usually easy to tell for everyone. I just dont think alot of today’s Hollywood movies have that edge that makes them special and great. You might get 1 or 2 movies each year that really stand out, the rest are usually watered down fluff for the masses. Thats why I dont goto the movies as much anymore. I have NetFlix and I wouldnt even rent most of these movies.

Well not all films can be exceptional, that is wishful thinking, why? because filmmaking is not an easy medium to do. There are so many technicalities that may go wrong in a picture. There was something that George Clooney said which really stayed with me, he said: “You can make a great picture if the screenplay is right. However in the process of making it there are too many things that could get in the way.” So even if there is a great script behind the production, there is still no guarantee that it will be good. Aside from that there are vast genre/category pictures that are out for the sole purpose of profit. Every film wants to profit and usually the studios will mettle with big blockbuster pictures and cut it the way they see fit. So most filmmakers who make these blockbusters have their hands tied unless someone like Spielberg or Scorses is making it. But to say that most films from the Hollywood system are utter trash is preposterous. Each studio will have at least 2 to 3 pictures that are of great value, like the Warners for example - in the past year they have dished some exceptional films like: Million Dollar Baby, The Departed, Gran Torino, and much more. I don’t remember any year in Hollywood where more than 6-7 exceptional pictures came out in the same year…except for 1939.
All that is fine and I understand that its hard to even make a bad film, but thats not gonna make me like a movie more. Im not saying its all utter trash, I guess its just not the kind of stuff that Id pay to see. You have to admit that movies and music have gotten worse quality wise over the years. Its just the way it is. Most of the movies I watch these days are older ones.
Yes, I’ll agree that I prefer to spend money on a classic film than to spend it on a film that is not worthy of anyone’s time. I especially feel the horror genre is the one that has suffered the most in terms of quality. I don’t like horror pictures anymore, they justt don’t have anything to offer. I like drama more than anything now. Nobody writes characters - or used to - like Joseph Mankiewicz. All About Eve is truly the smartest film ever written, it is a revelation fully equipped with fire and music!

Penn painted McCandless as a Christ-like prophet and everyone but him was wrong and they all seemed to bow down at his wisely words. He was a pretentious college know-it-all and incredibly stupid to boot. Anyone who thinks they can just walk into the woods and be free is a fucking dope.

I have seen it. It’s good, but top 3 of that year IMO is There Will Be Blood, The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford, and No Country For Old Men. Also Eastern Promises and I’m Not There is in the top of my list.

The Oscars were and are a joke. Even when the right film wins it’s almost by accident that everyone that votes just happend to think it was the best. Honor to win or not they are given far too much credit.
No Country For Old Men was a great film. I like Coen films a lot, so No Country was right down my alley. I think people were disappointed because of the lack of action in the movie. It was just a classic case of expecting one thing and getting something different but more thought provoking. People don’t usually go into a theater expecting to think too much…
There Will Be Blood was great. I’m also a big PTA fan as well. Magnolia is the only film I don’t own by PTA. Just never really liked that one. But films like Boogie Nights and Hard Eight were great. TWBB is my favorite now though. For some reason the film is just one of those flicks I can’t stop watching. Daniel Day Lewis needs a QT role ASAP.
The Wrestler was fun and a great character film. Rourke fit that role great! I’ve liked ALL of Aranofky’s films.
