Hausu (Japan, 1977) – 3/5

When Nobuhiko Obayashi goes overboard it’s no longer a case of style over substance, it’s style over the substance of style. For this reason I disliked Hausu on my initial viewing. It offers more visual fireworks during its opening 15 minutes than 20 normal movies altogether. The trick becomes old very fast. But, if you don’t let that mind you it’s actually quite a funny horror-comedy with endless cartoon visuals and enjoyable soundtrack. A less gory and cuter pre-version of Evil Dead 2, some might say. Just don’t expect it to be one of Obayashi’s better movies, or the rhino killer some internet communities seem to consider it. Bonus from the good cast; especially Miki Jinbo as â€
