Jackie and its fans

I think this movie is the most underrated of the bunch. This movie has some of the coolest charactors from all his movies. I havent seen a blackexplotation film like this seens the early eighties. They dont make them like they use to.

Jackie Brown isnt a blaxploitation film. Its a film starring a blaxploitation era star (Pam Grier). Blaxploitation was a certain period in film that began in the late 60s-early 70s and lasted for 5 or 6 years to the mid to late 70s. But Jackie Brown is definitely influenced by those films (music especially). Quentin explained it well. something to the effect of : Jackie Brown is like Coffy or Foxy Brown 25 years later, shes older, wiser and kind of at the end of the line as far as excitement goes. Its her last chance to make a big score.

thats an interesting point. but i think you can’t generally draw a line between exploitation and non-exploitation. what’s a remake of a blaxploitation movie? is it still a blaxploitation movie? (check out: Halle Berry stars in the remake of Foxy Brown, don’t get me wrong, I’ll watch everything where Halle is in, but I don’t like remakes)

Definately underrated.

Quentin wanted to do something more mature and show that he can do a serious movie without using so much violence to prove his point and get his message across.

I love Jackie Brown and i think that it is the best movie to chill with. I don’t know why but i just think that movie defines the word ‘chill’.

I have the soundtrack which is fucking awesome!! I love it. Again i listen to it to relax.

Jackie Brown wasnt a remake. It was based on the Elmore Leonard book as you already know. Quentin just injected the story with blaxploitation inspired characters i.e. Jackie and Ordell. But JB is just a crime film starring a african american, theres no real exploitative qualities in it.

A remake of a Blaxploitation film still really cant be considered a true blaxploitation film because it was a specific era in cinema. Even the Shaft remake with Sam Jackson isnt a blaxploitation film because the time it was made in. Foxy Brown starring Halle Berry wont be a blaxploitation film either. It will be an action film starring Halle.

The definition of an Exploitation film is : a film that is made to exploit the characters in it by overuse of stereotypes, graphic violence, sex, etc. A film that is made on a low budget and contains big thrills. These films were made to make a quick buck with little or no artistic integrity in them.

When you see an exploitation film you usually know it. :)

I’m reading this and find it interesting. In my opinion, Pulp Fiction had more blaxploitation in it than then all of John Singleton’s Shaft.

In Jackie Brown, did anyone notice Pam Grier drinking from a Teriyaki Donut cup in the Del Amo Mall?

of course she had that cup, because she bought her snack at Teriyaki, which is that snack-bar in the background.

but i think there was no big-kahuna in Jackie B, right? was there any Red Apple?

That was a great idea QT had when he decided to create his own commercial brands (Big Kahuna, Red Apple, Teriyaki Donut). That way he didnt have to pay real companies for their brand names to appear in his films. The guy really knows what hes doing

NOTE: If you wanna see a good spoof of the Blaxploitation era, go see Undercover Brother. That will give you an idea of what those films were like.

Did anyone catch Red Apple smokes in Four Rooms?

Howabout Big Kahuna burgers in From Dusk Till Dawn?

They should really make a Big Kahuna joint. The burgers sound delicious.

And jesus, how much would I love to take a girl to a real Jack Rabbit Slims?

If any of you live in Orlando, goto the Disney MGM theme park and have lunch at the Sci-Fi drive in. It’s a restauraunt that looks like your in an outdoor drive in movie theater from the fifties. The tables are inside these fake cars (just like Jack Rabbit Slims) that are all pointed towards the screen so you can be having the Creature from the Black Lagoon Salad and watching previews of Tarantula. This place is the money.

I think it would be the bomb to take a chick to a Jackrabbit Slims. Id definitely get a Douglas Sirk steak (bloody as hell) and a Five Dollar shake (Amos n Andy). I loved the music being played at Jackrabbits too.

I was just thinking, wouldnt it be the bomb if in Kill Bill, K-BILLY radio was doing a “Radical Sounds of the 80s” weekend? The only thing is Kill Bill doesnt take place in the Res Dogs Universe, but maybe K-BILLY radio can transcend QTs film worlds like The Wolf can.

Whoa, Whoa K-BILLY?.. KILL BILL? Is there a connection there?

Dont forget KILL ZED from Pulp Fiction either. Remember?

NOTE: Quentin used to work at the Del Amo Mall.

I never noticed that K-B-I-L-L-Y/Kill Bill thing. It’s awesome. I love it. I wish I could’a put it in my review of the prologue. I analyzed the title but never even caught that RD reference. Damn. Its spectacular how some of Quentin’s new work brings new meaning to his old work.

This really isn’t the same but it’s like changing Jackie’s last name from Burke to Brown. Jackie Brown, Foxy Brown, same actress. But the Kbilly reference is so cool. I wonder if Quentin Knows about it?

Also, another thing. Can someone explain to mean both universes that Quentin uses. I heard this once but can’t remember it. I know there’s something at aintitcool.com about it but wanna hear it from you guys first.

And that thing about the Del Amo Mall, where did he work? I never heard this part. Was this in any of the biographies? I can’t believe I missed it.

When I said it would be cool if The Wolf was in Kill Bill, I was only saying. At no time did I see him make an appearance in the script. It is not yet confirmed whether The Wolf can transcend universes, but ofcourse, if anyone can transcend universes, it should be The Wolf. He’s The

Harrys article (AICN) a few months back told about QTs film universes:

“To which Quentin broke it down like: so JACKIE BROWN takes place in Elmore Leonard’s Universe not his. TRUE ROMANCE, RESERVOIR DOGS and PULP FICTION take place in Quentin Universe #1. This universe is REALER THAN REAL. Meanwhile: His original NATURAL BORN KILLERS script and FROM DUSK TILL DAWN take place in Quentin Universe #2 which is the MOVIE MOVIE universe. Now according to Quentin, there are specific rules that govern these two Universes of his. For example Characters from Universe #1 cannot venture into Universe #2, but say Mr Blonde can appear in Pulp Fiction, and Clarence could appear in Res Dogs, but Vincent Vega could never meet the Gecko Brothers or Mickey and Mallory. And in Universe #2 those characters can’t venture into Universe #1, but can go between the films in their universe. Why is this important? Well, KILL BILL takes place in the MOVIE MOVIE universe where it is possible that Mickey and Mallory could exist or the Gecko Brothers. BUT, also in the Movie Movie universe, characters from other movies folks like BILLY JACK or SHAFT well they exist in the Movie Movie universe as well. So if Quentin wanted Bruce Lee’s Chen Zhen from FIST OF FURY to appear in KILL BILL then Chen Zhen could appear, not that Chen Zhen will appear but it is within the realm of possibility.Quentin then states that there is only ONE character in his Universe that can disobey these rules and that is THE WOLF. THE WOLF can go between the universes because while he exists in the REALER THAN REAL universe He’s a MOVIE MOVIE character that just exists in reality. And I do not know if he’s in KILL BILL, but I think it odd that he point this out unless it is possible.”

thanks for the recap, it clears up alota things.

It’s cool that The Wolf can jump universes and maybe it has to happen. I gotta tell you, there was no Wolf in the Kill Bill script but, in the first scene in PF, if you read it, it never says anything about Vince although you see him in the film so hopefully we’ll get to see The Wolf in the casino, since he can transcend universes. That would be so awesome if he’s in Kill Bill in the b.g. of that hotel casino scene and is actually talking to Jules from PF. This proves it, Quentin is a god. He even has his own religion “Quesih.” I’m not kidding. Its on the internet. I’m a member.

Yeah, Ive been a member of Queish for a couple years too. I think that website went offline though.

yes it’s offline now. richard (the webmaster) has now entered job life and he’s obvioulsy no more time for web-mastering. a pity.

what i don’t like about this queish page is, there is nothing else than a list. :o

Jackie Brown is a great film, but some people just dont get it! Somehow it is mote mature than Pulp nDogs.<br/> And the ending with Pam and Robert is very powerful scene, and I think that if Max and Jackie Jack would leave together, the ending would be kind of lame...<br/> <br/> By the way, my ex-girlfriends opinion was that Jackie is the best film by QT.

Jackie Brown is a very good film & my favorite Elmore Leonard film adaptation (although Get Shorty is really good too).

Some other good Elmore Leonard story to movie adaptions:

3:10 To Yuma

Mr. Majestyk (mentioned in True Romance by Drexl : (“Hey Marty, you know what we got here? another fuckin Charlie Bronson, Mr Majestyk?..”)

THREE THE HARD WAY and TROUBLE MAN are available? I haven’t been able to find those 2 anywhere!

Others that have yet to be released on DVD/VHS that I want to see are:

THE SPOOK WHO SAT BY THE DOOR

CANDY TANGERINE MAN

TOP OF THE HEAP

THE BLACK GESTAPO

POP GOES THE WEASEL

THE “jigga” CHARLY films

GANGA AND HESS

COOL BREEZE

BLACK GUNN

TOGETHER BROTHERS

Interestingly, THE MACK gets a DVD release this fall which contains a documentary and a Max Julien & director commentary! That should be fun.

Plus, if you’ve got IFC (Independent film channel) check it out on the 15th of August cause an hour long documentary called BADASS CINEMA will air!
