I like Jackie Brown a lot BUT

anyone else think it was weird how Tarantino used De Niro? He was comic releaf. Almost pointless for him to even be in the movie. He filled his role good though.

Under-rated flick.

Its weird in the since Tarantino never used a person so “Big Buget” like and comis relief is one of the most important parts of a film like Jackie Brown. Just my Thoughts.

what do you mean “big Buget” are you trying to say tarantino doesnt use any big famous people

not really, tarantino seems to make stars of people, travolta, jackson, uma, roth, etc. Im not saying they wernt stars already, im saying because of tarnatino in most part they are now bieng payed the big bucks to be in movies. de Niro was already a big star with Goodfellas, Casino, Taxi Driver, ya know.

i dig i dig. well ok then Preach’ now i get it. De Niro was the perfect part of Luis in my mind, played things real cool like

well I absolutely LOVE the way he integrated DeNiro. He is a terrific actor and playing that ex-con bum-like off-real-life person was just cool.

Louuuuuizzzz, where is the car, Louuuuizzz?

Yeah, but it’s DE NIRO. Why even use him for such a small role?

why the fuck not? the role was cool, the actor is cool. is there a law that high-paid actors always have to play starring roles? no. point.
why the fuck not? the role was cool, the actor is cool. is there a law that high-paid actors always have to play starring roles? no. point.
The role was ok. The actor’s a legend. I think it was pointless is all. I hope Tarantino writes him a great role someday.

Its obvious why QT picked DeNiro for that role. He picked him to play Louis because he knew people expected DeNiro’s part to be a great jawdropping character, whereas Louis is the exact opposite of those kind of characters DeNiro is famous for playing. Hes quiet, sluggish and indifferent in the movie. Plus hes playing a supporting role, which in itself is strange for DeNiro. Its like QT was playing a little joke on the hardcore DeNiro fans (of which I am one) by doing that. Its like hes saying “Watch what I can do with this big Hollywood legendary actor, ha ha ha”. Also he put Pam Grier and Robert Forster in front as the main stars. That also says alot. QT dont play the Hollywood game, look at the stars of his movies, he picks the underrated actors as his stars, not “the latest popular thing”.

Hell yeah Vic! I hear ya, however, its not like Bobbie didn’t still act his as* off in this one. Its a more understated peformance because his character is so socially handicapped, but how would I know that about Louis unless Deniro portrayed it right, he pulled it off really well. Like you can tell in some scenes when Odelle is talking he’s nodding, but hes still kind of in his own world, concentrating on looking normal. He could have come off looking like a retard instead of like an ex-con.

Its still an actor’s role, its not like QT gave him a part that had no room for interpertation. I think even a die-hard Deniro fan can appreciate the skill it talkes to look like a slouch, without being a distraction.

say what you want, I think both the role and DeNiro’s acting is terrific in jackie Brown and the decision to cast him is TOP!

I stand by what I said. I wish Tarantino would write De Niro an amazing role one day.

That’s what I would love to see

go watch Jackie Brown, ;D
Yeah, but De Niro isn’t the latest popular thing. If you’re implying that he used De Niro as a joke and if it’s true I have zero respect for that. I doubt it though. It was the only role De Niro would fit in with Robert Forester as Max and I think Tarantino just wanted to use him. I don’t remember exactly but I think Taxi Driver was on his top ten list. A lot of the manurisms seemed like an old stoner criminal version of Travis Bickle. Not to say it was a Travis Bickle-esque performance (not by any means) but it did seem like he had a real hard time relating to people since he kinda lived in his own world.

I didnt say DeNiro was the latest popular thing, I said QT is known for using actors that AREN’T the latest popular thing, hence using Pam Grier and Robert Forster as the main stars and putting the great Robert DeNiro in a supporting role.

Yes, I do think one of the reasons QT picked Bobby D to play a low key role (I’m not implying its not an excellent performance by any means), is because he wanted to sort of play a little joke on the fans of Bobby D. I’m just saying that most fans of QT and Bobby D (including myself) would expect a QT film with Bobby D to be something groundbreaking and amazing. Whereas Louis Gara is a really quiet, not very captivating character in the movie, as compared to DeNiro’s most famous roles in Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, King of Comedy, Cape Fear etc.

Deniro was perfect as Louis and after reading THE SWITCH he fits the role even more!

De Niro was perfect in the role because he’s supposed to be this ineffectual loser, but he still has this anger and danger brewing beneath the surface. Melanie doesn’t realise that even though he looks like a loser and a joke, if you push him too far he will snap.

And just because he didn’t have the starring role it doesn’t mean that his character didn’t matter or that it was a throwaway part.

Well said Norma! You got it!
