QT's Top Movie List

Quentin Tarantino (U.S.): The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (Leone); Rio Bravo (Hawks); Taxi Driver (Scorsese); His Girl Friday (Hawks); Rolling Thunder (Flynn); They All Laughed (Bogdanovich); The Great Escape (J. Sturges); Carrie (De Palma); Coffy (Hill); Dazed and Confused (Linklater); Five Fingers of Death (Chang); Hi Diddle Diddle (Stone).

I have all of these except “They All Laughed”, “Five Fingers of Death” and “Hi Diddle Diddle”. 3 more films to check out if you havent seen them.

What the hell, Im gonna make my own list:

Apocalypse Now/Godfather (tie) (Coppola); Touch Of Evil (Welles); Taxi Driver (Scorsese); Pulp Fiction (Tarantino); The Wild Bunch (Peckinpah); Blow Out (DePalma); A Bout de Souffle (Godard); Seven Samurai (Kurosawa); Stardust Memories (Allen); A Clockwork Orange (Kubrick); Night of the Hunter (Laughton); Blade Runner (Scott)

Perhaps this selection contains too many contemporary titles, but hey, I’m still young

Reservoir Dogs (Tarantino); Twelve Monkeys (Gilliam); Edward Scissorhands (Burton); Blue Velvet (Lynch); Lola Rennt (Tykwer); Shawshank Redemption (Darabont); The Shining (Kubrick); Casino (Scorsese); The Usual Suspects (Synger); Dangerous Liaisons (Frears); Fight Club (Fincher); American Beauty (Mendes); The Insider (Mann); The Big Lebowski (Coen brothers); Apocalypse Now (Coppola)
I generally do not believe in lists but…

The Matrix

Pulp Fiction

The Apartment

Fight Club

Jackie Brown

The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly

Army of Darkness

Big Lebowski

The Manchurian Candidate

Ed Wood
I already regret it and want to redo it, but that is what is wrong with lists.

And here my list:

  • Pulp Fiction
  • Blade Runner
  • Schindler´s List
  • Ed Wood
  • Fargo
  • Taxi Driver
  • Fight Club
  • Dracula (Coppola)
  • The Lord of the Rings
  • The Great Escape

Damn, i was actually going to get Five Fingers of Death once, but decided not to because of the semi low rating on the imdb. Instead i got Five Deadly Venoms and Shaolin Master Killer, both great flicks.

I’ve already wrote out a list on this forum once before, but since it’s always changing i guess i’ll write another…

Mulholland Dr. (Lynch)

Dead or Alive (Miike)

Battle Royale (Fukasaku)

Reservoir Dogs (Tarantino)

Electric Dragon 80,000 V. (Ishii)

Audition (Miike)

Kids Return (Kitano)

Ichi the Killer (Miike)

Versus (Kitamura)

The Wild Bunch (Peckinpah)

Top 10? I hate these, but here it goes:

  1. Rules of the Game (Renoir)
  2. The Searchers (Ford)
  3. Vertigo (Hitchcock)
  4. Rio Bravo (Hawks)
  5. Raging Bull (Scorsese)
  6. Ugetsu (Mizoguchi)
  7. L’Atalante (Vigo)
  8. Faces (Cassavetes)
  9. Letter from an Unknown Woman (Ophuls)
  10. The Naked Kiss (Fuller)

Now I don’t wanna be called a snob for not including any of QT’s work there. The fact is, I love his movies and they have a very personal meaning to me (hell, he is the only director nowadays I keep up on), but he still has to go a long way before he can touch these.

You cant defend your choices now, you chose what you chose.

How can you prefer ResDogs to Pulp?

I’ve always preferred ‘Dogs’ to ‘Pulp’. Don’t get me wrong, I think they are both smashing good films, but I believe ‘Dogs’ is more of an absolute masterpiece - that was my opinion after I first saw them, and after viewing both movies lots and lots of more times it is still how I feel. No use in explaining why, it’s just a preference of one brilliant film over another.

Pulp Fiction is more of a masterpiece to me. I loved Dogs alot, but Pulp has so much more going on in it. Its better on so many levels. The camerawork, the characters, the storyline, dialogue is better. Reservoir Dogs is like an appetizer and Pulp is the main course. Thats my opinion on it.

My favourite is Pulp Fiction, and RD are fantastic, but every time I see Jackie Brown I think is one of the films with the best characters in the history!

Like a lot of people say in this forum Jackie is an underated film.

I cannot understand anyone prefering Dogs, Dogs kicks ass but it’s characters are nowhere near as strong or layered–

PF also has a lot of subtext. It actually has a meaning. Dogs is just a fucking cool, original crime flick.

Wow, of all my choices, i thought Res Dogs was pretty safe.

I’m not saying Reservoir Dogs is the better film, i was just making a list of my personal favorite movies. I personally enjoy watching Dogs more than i do Pulp. I don’t really see why i should have to defend myself.

That’s all it comes down to, i enjoy watching Dogs more than Pulp. I’m not arguing to say one is better than the other, because i don’t feel that way. I could go on your list and say i enjoyed Evil Dead II more than Army of Darkness, but what’s the point? It’s just an opinion.

Reservoir Dogs,Pulp Fiction,Fight Club,The Fellowship of The Ring, and Dawn of the Dead.

Where is Blow Out (Brian de Palma) in the Tarantino List? He said that his 3 favourite films are Rio Bravo, Taxi Driver and Blow out… :-/

in the book " Quentin Tarantino - Interviews" his favorite movies are:

Rio Bravo, Taxi Driver, BLOW OUT, Abbot and Costello meet frankenstein, big wednesday, where eagles dare, fandango, breathless remake, days of thunder, rolling thunder

I can see some of his choices, but DAYS OF FUCKIN THUNDER?!! That movie is worse than Top Gun! QT definitely has eccentric tastes in movies.

he said something like, it was a spaghetti western with cars or something…
he said something like, it was a spaghetti western with cars or something…
Yeah he said its like a “Sergio Leone movie with cars”. I still think it sucks. I really think he was saying that because he was kissing Tony Scott’s ass after he made True Romance or Crimson Tide. Tony Scott aint no Sergio Leone either, lol.
