By mindless I mean a bunch of mixed metaphors that make no sense/can be interpreted a thousand different ways and get repeated way too many times. It doesn't take effort or skill to get really fucked up, create a few random lines and then repeat them twenty times for three minutes.

The band is technically proficient but I need more than "trippy" music.

I can say the same for "Punk" rock music. No skill or effort what-so-ever (Though The Doors had alot of effort, I don't understand that part) in punk rock music. Though you have to say Punk Rock was a big part of rock history, the same for the Doors and bands like the Beatles.

With Punk rock it really depends on the band. There were alotta bands that pretty much just got on stage and made a bunch of noise.

that's a generalization and stereotype of the music. most of those bands were middle class kids pretending they grew up in shanties in the midwest and were pissed off and broke.

but bands like the replacements, black flag, fugazi, minor threat, minutemen, the clash, bad brains, death and the fall had more skill than most of the bands mentioned in this thread so far.

So it's okay to say most of but not a lot of? Cause that sounds just as much like a generalization as what I said.

Like I said; it depends on the band. For every band that was actually good and made a name for themselves through talent, there's at least five really shitty bands trying to ride on their coat tails. Same goes for any genre of any art form.

you said about an entire genre. i said it about a subgroup of a very specific area. shitty bands = posers. that's how it works...mine was a fact. yours was a generalization. this is the way it goes, captain amazing.

There are punk that I do like:

Iggy Pop (with and without The Stooges)
MC5

Ones I don't like:

mostly Sex Pistols and others like them. That no talent scene where it was more of posers and statements than anything. I don't like them.

Ramones are hit and miss with me.

I do agree. So if Iggy Pop isn't punk, then Punk Rock is garbage. I agree with Mr. Pink.

So they do stupid shit on stage, yell about nothing in their songs, wear mohawks and hate their parents. Boring. Revolutionaries, there not. I get the whole rebel thing, but they called it punk for the fact that they were just little fuckin' brats that said some gross shit in their songs (if you call them songs) and did drugs.

To talk shit about successful bands like the Stones to try to rise the level of the punk bands is ludicrous.

Sorry about the Ramones stuff.

I know Iggy Pop is the Godfather of punk and I like him and the Stooges. But the line is drawn with that crap they call Sex Pistols.

Well that is good to know. Everyone here has big differences when it comes to music.

Here are SOME of the things I like to give an idea:

The Doors
Frank Sinatra
Alice In Chains
Johnny Cash
Rolling Stones
T.Rex
White Zombie
Black Sabbath
etc, etc.

And yes F.W. I like the Lou Reed's of Rock as well.

Iggy and the Stooges were protopunk/garage rock. they only inspired punk rock. they were like The Sonics and other bands of that ilk that still played loud and loose.

and G, your views on punk rock are very, very ignorant and limited to a niche group of punk rock bands...

The Clash sang about political and social injustice and mixed rock themes with reggae themes in their music. bands like Alice in Chains and Nirvana wouldn't exist without punk rock because of the bands it produced and the genres it created in its wake where it became post-punk and new wave and alternative rock. Minor Threat and Fugazi were both based on the straight edge movement: no drugs, no alcohol and living life good. they still made hardcore punk and some of it is more musically complex than an entire Doors a-side. if you want recommendations just ask because you can't base your dislike for an entire couple of chapters in musical history on a couple of bands even if one of those bands started the whole thing and is the polar opposite of garbage like the Pistols, who were poster children for self-destruction.

And gross shit in songs?

Here's an example of a Ramones song:

Well the kids are all hopped up and ready to go
They're ready to go now
They got their surfboards
And they're going to the Discotheque Au Go Go
But she just couldn't stay
She had to break away
Well New York City really has is all
Oh yeah, oh yeah
Sheena Is A Punk Rocker-
Sheena Is A Punk Rocker
Sheena Is A Punk Rocker
Well she's a Punk Punk, A Punk Rocker
Punk Punk A Punk Rocker-
Punk Punk A Punk Rocker
Punk Punk A Punk Rocker

i fail to find anything explicitly disgusting in this song.

they even do covers of 50s rocknroll and Beach Boys songs...

recommendations for G and i'm doing this with bands and their best albums:

the replacements:

they only did two true punk records, Sorry Ma Forgot to Take out the Trash and their EP Stink. after those they evolved and Westerberg's songwriting matured and they came out with some really good stuff like Tim, Let It Be (their finest) and Pleased to Meet Me. their punk rock is great too, its really loud and loose and fun.

minor threat and fugazi:

both led by ian mckaye and both "hardcore" but both responsible for the "Straight Edge" movement. politically and socially minded. i'd listen to Fugazi's The Arguement and go from there.

minutemen:

all you need to start is their double album: double nickels on a dime. because its musically one of the most diverses albums ever made.

the fall:

they have so many fucking albums and have been around for so fucking long. just go with perverted by language and see from there.

gang of four:

Entertainment!

Lou Reed:

Rock N Roll Animal is and always will be one of the most important live albums ever. you like glam and bolan? this is right up your alley. also Prakash John is an amazing bass player.

The Modern Lovers:

get their self-titled album.

Art Brut:

Bang Bang Rock N Roll is their best. these guys are recent and funny and a sort of punk/new wave revival. very good stuff.

Rancid:

they suck now, yes but And Out Come the Wolves is just an amazing album musically, shut out the lyrics if you want but tell me Olympia WA doesn't get your head bobbing.

The Soft Boys:

Underwater Moonlight - this album is so fucking great. Hitchcock as a kind of Jim Morrison talk/sing poet thing going on except he's got a nasaly english snarl a lot of the time and the music has fucking ATTITUDE. especially this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j45sakJO ... PL&index=2

Television Personalities:

And Don't the Kids Just Love It

Violent Femmes:

these guys were discovered by Fleetwood Mac if you can believe it. they're acoustic folk punk or whatever its called. they sing about sexual frustration. it will remind of your teenage years, no matter how far or close behind they are. get their self-titled album.

so there you go. give any one or all of these ones a shot and if you like some tell me, i might have some specific recommendations for you. i always like to talk about music more than movies anyway.
