The Bloodiest Kung Fu/Samurai Movies?

Which movies do you think is the bloodiest in Kung Fu/Samurai films?

[i]added ‘Kung Fu/Samurai’ to the title so people won’t forget the subject later on.

For some reason my mind is a blank at the moment, but at least

The Executioner (Ishii / Chiba)

Lone Wolf and Cub: Babycart in Peril

Ricky Oh (Story of Ricky)

Many other Chiba films (The Killing Machine, The Bodyguard, Street Fighter 1&2, the Oyama trilogy etc) also come with a healthy dose of ultra-violence. Toho’s 70’s samurai films like Demon Spies, Shadow Hunters 1&2 and the rest of the Lone Wolf and Cub films are rather gory, too. Toei’s 60’s ninja films are pretty violent from what I’ve heard but I haven’t seen those myself. Teruo Ishii’s 1973 chambara masterpiece Porno jidaigeki - Bohachi bushido is not one of the most graphic films but is filled with hands, legs and heads flying through the air nevertheless.

Somebody who knows Chang Cheh better than I do can tell us which of his movies are most violent. He’s the Chinese Peckinpah so his movies definitely belong to this thread.

Vengeance might be the bloodiest Chang Cheh film Ive personally seen. Most of his films have some kind of heroic bloodshed.

The Chinese Boxer has a great bloody fight sequence in it. Thats a Jimmy Wang Yu film. It is one that inspired Kill Bills HOBL sequence.

Any of the Lone Wolf and Cub samurai films are bloody. My favorite one is Babycart To Hades.

Let’s not forget Lady Snowblood. Barrels of blood in that one.

Chinese Super Ninjas would get my vote for bloodiest Chang Cheh flick I have seen. Bodies ripped in half, explosions of blood and five element super ninjas from the evil land of Japan - can’t beat it

Riki-Oh

Bar none.

Speaking of the Chinese Super Ninjas (aka Five Element Ninja), IVL will be releasing a half-arsed remaster later this year, and Media Blasters, who have promised to fix all the mistakes IVL keeps making, also has this on their release list. No date yet, though.

I have been a fan of Kung Fu for a long time, and I’m starting to get into Samurai films, so what best to start with than Lone Wolf and Cub! I bought Lone Wolf and Cub: Sword of Vengeance, that is the first one right? I’m kind of new to Samaurai, because I never got into them, just always was into Kung Fu movies. I bought the Lone Wolf and Cub: SOV last night. Should be coming this week.

So first of all, Sword of Vengeance is the first right? How would you all rate Lone Wolf and Cub: Sword of Vengeance out of them all, then rate it as it stands as a movie alone. Thanks!

I like SOV but Babycart To Hades (the one in your sig) is probably my favorite out of them all. SOV is more of a movie that sets up the story. The others after it flow quicker and theres more action scenes in them.

^ Thanks PutneySwope and Hung Fist! So SOV stands pretty good on it’s own as a movie?

Yeah I seen the scene in my sig and said to myself, I have to get these movies! LOL.

SOV is my least favorite i think. But worth watching of course. You need to see it to know the origin of Ogami Itto and Daigoro. You might as well just get the whole series. Thats what i did.

^ Yeah I wasn’t going to pay $150 yet, so I bought the first one first. Might buy the whole thing on ebay after I seen this one. Thanks again.

But hey, why is it your least favorite? Is it low on blood and violence?

Yeah its more like the set up of the characters/story so it moves kind of slow (for my tastes anyways). Im not against character based movies but when it comes to the 70s pop samurai films I like alot of cool bloody sword slashing action.

^ Thanks for the info. Is all the movies combine in a one story, type thing, or are they all just different stories with the same background though, and can stand alone by themselves?

The LWAC films are a continuing story of Ogami and his son Daigoro.

^ I knew that, I just didn’t know with sequels of today’s movies, they have like a different story than the first one or was it something like Star Wars, how it was the same story following throughout. Thanks for all the info you gave me.

No problemo! Glad i could help!

I’ve only seen the first three and Sword of Vengeance (great cinematography!) is my favorite out of them. But as far as I can tell they’re all the same in quality
