Hostel 2 commentary

She just produces now but she came out of retirement just for Quentin and Eli.

I saw a photo of her with Eli when he was directing Hostel II, he was wearing that cool Cannibal Holocaust t shirt.

It makes me wish I was a fan of his, but Im just not into his movies. Cant help it.

Putney: that surprises me. Really it does.

On one of the featurettes he is talking to Ruggero Deodato and singing his praises, the director of his number one film of all time, Cannibal Holocaust.

Im surprised Im not an Eli fan too. I love all the films he does (Cannibal Holocaust is also a fave of mine), Im just not really into his stuff. Its weird.

Maybe I’ll just buy the Hostel 2 dvd for the commentary too. I haven’t even seen the second movie yet, that’s how much of an Eli fan I am.

Personally, I don’t know how people find movies like Hostel and Saw (even though I prefer the latter much than the former) the least bit scary. I think their point is to disgust you rather than to scare you, and that is probably why they’re labeled “torture porn”. The most effective horror movies in history all relied on suspense rather than blood and gore.

I dont see why QT is such a big fan of Eli’s either. Is he really that great? I dont get that whole thing at all.

Roth is not a master film-maker by any means but he makes groovy little horror films. Hostel 2 was great if taken as an exploitation film which is exactly what it is, its tone is far more ridiculous than hostel 1 but it still has value and contains one of the most disturbing scenes in cinema history IMO (the blood-bath scene…ewwwwwww!)

I’ve been watching horror movies since I was 4 years old. If anything I should be part of the demographic that should create psychos, if you believe all this bullshit, and I’m not.

To conservative critics, if you watch a lot of porn and horror films, and play First Person Shooters, you will undoubtedly become a serial killer. …Right…

Wolf Creek was far better than Hostel in my opinion. But I can stand Hostel, I do like the start scenes with the backpackers in Amsterdam.

Even though I enjoy Hostel Wolf Creek is not only better but its the best horror movie I have seen to come out in years.

And you like Long Weekend, so I know you have good taste. ;D

is it true that they talk about the german censorship in the commentary?

I read that (besides cutting 8 seconds) they didn’t put that part on the german DVD release! (which is kind of a scandal in my book)

Is there an Eli Roth fan site other than his myspace fan page?

The whole “torture porn” moniker makes me laugh. It actually severely irritates me. Because it doesn’t exist. It was made up by a critic, Dave Poland I think, and it stuck. I don’t know a single person who gets off sexually watching the torture scenes in a Hostel movie or a Saw movie.

But it does exist. Case in point would be someone by the name of Ted Bundy - I think everyone knows what he did and how he brutally raped women. Some people take pleasure into that kind of stuff and the way it’s being exploited right now and shown to a generation of young people is disconcerting. I like gore and over the top violence, but only when it’s done right (and by right I don’t mean the special-effects, I mean in the way it’s used) . Romero/Savini blended humor and its completely funny when you see it, but here Eli uses it in a harmful way, he wants to hurt us literally, with the use of gratuitous violence. Still, it doesn’t affect me, but I know someone who watched (female) and she was completely overwrought by it, it’s her fault for seeing it but still, it should have been an NC-17 picture.

Here is a great video on horror movie ratings. John Landis, David Cronenberg, and John Carpenter:
